Just after I married, I had to move to London to work for a year. So, to blunt the pain of absence, my wife gave me a stuffed, toy dog that cost her £10. We named him Red. Whilst we were with him, we poured our love for each other into him and this ‘love battery’ supported me while I was away.

Every couple has ways to communicate; hugs, talk, sex, acts of love (or hate I guess), fantasy… well Red became a new way for us to talk and learn from each other. As time went by, he developed a history, things he liked (like rabbits) and disliked (like chickens). We found ourselves occasionally seeing through his eyes. We knew he was a toy, inanimate but he represented to us that we could have what we wanted, regardless of what others might think… even if that was a toy as a real life friend.

Red is gentle, honest and loyal. He is not a fairy tale, he knows that bad things happen and it saddens him but it does not ruin his own joy. He does what we can to love but no more.

Eventually, he got a family… One day, he found a stone and spent a summer hatching it. Out came a baby dragon and his daughter, Tiny, was born. Now she has her stories too.

Red and Tiny became friends of the family. Now, he is the figurehead for the Red Dog Production Company.

So here, I can share with you the stories of Red. Short, children’s stories that started off for Nephews and Nieces and now they are for you.
